VONDELLAAN
MIXED DEVELOPMENT – GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS
The project is a part of the housing campaign, “35 bold building projects in Groningen, INTENSE CITY” exploring intensification and mixed programming in 35 locations in the existing city area. The campaign aimed at building a surplus of 10,000 dwellings within the city area.
We proposed not a vertical city, but a vertical suburbia with three apartment towers (loft spaces, penthouses and flats with winter gardens) and a band of row houses. The public program elements, all-accessible from the street, occupy the first two levels. A public deck connects between the programs with most public activity, while the school has a more private yard. The gymnasium is at the center of it all, a kind of giant living room to the public program’s domestic functions.
