WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION
WTO – GENEVA, SWITZERLAND
Competition 2008
The building proposed intends to symbolize a new identity for the WTO site – for staff and visitors alike as well as the general public passing through the park. Respectful off and clearly differentiated from the existing building which has a presence and aura almost like a feature of nature, it is well integrated into its natural and urban surroundings. It is transparent, filled with light, flexible, efficient in use both of space and energy.
Urbanistically, our proposal follows historical precedent such as the extension of the east wing in 1937, and the south wing in 1949. Yet this time, we propose to add a new quality – a “park wing”. The park wing offers a large and transparent lobby, a library, and a café at the ground floor level as a new communication platform for the WTO while minimizing the height and bulk of the new building in order to fit gracefully into the surroundings. The facade is designed with a combination of wood and glass. The building conforms to the Minergie-P standard.
