MORE THAN HOUSING
MORE THAN HOUSING – ZÜRICH, SWITZERLAND
Competition 2009
This project, a competition organized by the private housing cooperative “Mehr als Wohnen” and the city of Zürich, is conceived to provide 320 apartments and shared amenities on a formerly industrial site in Zürich with the aim of conforming to the vision of the 2000W society. Heating energy consumption, transportation and grey energy are minimized and building costs kept at below 3500 SFr/sqm GFA. Apartments are strictly oriented south in slim ribbon buildings which are spaced with the required distance to guarantee, that the complete south façade is getting complete south sun exposure, even in the winter time. Each apartment is a passive house so that only the desired level of comfort might necessitate additional heating (here provided by district heating). With its framing structure, prefabricated shafts and non-bearing dividing walls, the project achieves a high amount of flexibility in terms of apartment layout and variety in the façade pattern. A central zone of public program and circulation orientated north – south makes the area accessible and connects the city to the north with the park in the south.
