Swiss pavilion expo 2012 in YEOSU, KOREA - COMPETITION 2011

Hosoya Schaefer in collaboration with Exponential Group, Shanghai and Luxoom, Berlin have been selected by Präsenz Schweiz as one of five teams to prepare a proposal for the Swiss Pavilion at the World Exposition 2012 in Yeosu Korea. The theme of the exposition is „Living Oceans and Coasts“. The Swiss contribution needed to create a thematic connection to Switzerland, include a satellite presence in Seoul and allow for highlighting the Swiss Cleantech industry. The theme proposed “We Produce Oceans” was used as an online platform with an online game, as an urban installation and curation in Seoul and as a leitmotiv for the pavilion in Yeosu.

Hosoya Schaefer Architects and shiftcontrol, Copenhagen, in collaboration with unitystudios, Aarhus completed an online application for zdf.de. The game accompanies the three-part documentary “Universum der Ozeane” with Frank Schätzing on ZDF’s TerraX and allows the visitor to explore the oceans in a dive robot or five different avatars. The application is an experiment in interactive and immersive information graphics and uses 3D game software, behaviors and narratives to communicate dependencies and relationships in a complex (eco)system, such as the oceans. With special magenta cyan glasses the game can be played in 3D. The October 1 issue of tvdigital with a circulation of more than 2 mio. contained a special feature about the series and a free pair of 3D glasses.

The oceans are an ancient and complex ecosphere of which we know and understand only little. Especially the deep sea is as foreign as outer space. Yet, the oceans are the origin of life. And they are the basis for our existence on earth. Even for us terrestrial creatures, the sea holds the key to our past and future. The delicate balance of the oceans currently seems to be tipping. Food webs are unrevealing and reorganizing. Some species disappear, others multiply in abundance. Even the geology of the ocean floors itself could be affected by human intervention. At best, we are losing an important source of food, resources and revenue. At worst, life on earth could be affected in a profound way in the worst case through runaway climate change through methane blowouts. Such shifts happened in the past and are documented in the geological record which we are starting to decipher. Nature always moved on, but the dominant species of the preceding eras usually disappeared.

MEDIA INSTALLATION – WOLFSBURG, GERMANY

What will be the mobility of the future? By what means will we travel; how will we plan our cities and how will we organize our lives in order to stay mobile? Such questions are addressed by visionary thinkers in the Mobiglobe installation at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. The installation shows mobility as the systemic interplay between transportation, city structure, resource flows and lifestyle. Its main message is that sustainable mobility needs to be based not only on improved cars running on renewable energy or new solutions for public transport, but also on urban planning strategies, resource management and changes in personal lifestyle. Only with combined measures in all areas can mobility truly be optimized. In the film, presented on six over-sized rear projection panels arranged like the windows of a car, four visionaries are presenting their projects or concepts; in the same space, six interactive stations add detail and explain the defining parameters of each project.

The graphic leitmotiv of the installation is a starry sky representing the many ideas available to improve the future. Among them are those that can be combined to innovative strategies and sustainable solutions. But only when the issues confronting us are understood in a systemic manner, meaningful choice becomes possible. The interviews take place in the white space generated by one of the stars enveloping all the screens and are supported by precisely choreographed graphics. Each segment ends with a panorama of a real environment showing the project or concept in action. The film illustrates the progress from idea to strategy, project and implementation and makes a proactive stance towards the future palpable.

NEWS STUDIO – MAINZ, GERMANY 2007 (on air since 2009)

Hosoya Schaefer Architects has been part of an interdisciplinary team working on the new heute news studio at ZDF. The brief was to create a studio that allows new ways of moderating newscasts on TV, but has implications also for online and other new media. The studio was planned partly in real space, partly in virtual space and had to be a cutting edge fusion of the capabilities of both. The studio was built with the newest technologies, robot controlled cameras and vizRT based virtual technology.

Hosoya Schaefer Architects was responsible for conceptualizing the relationship between real and virtual space and to create concepts, proposals and first layouts for information graphics in collaboration with experts for on-air, online and industrial design as well as typography. To this end the total studio environment including the cameras was built in a game engine serving as a tool for rapidly prototyping concepts. It was also planned to link this construct to database based content.

MEDIA INSTALLATION – WOLFSBURG, GERMANY

Hosoya Schaefer Architects, Zürich, teamed up with Shiftcontrol, Copenhagen, and Buro Destruct, Bern, to create a media installation on automobility for Autostadt Wolfsburg, a subsidiary of Volkswagen. The research and graphic work of Hosoya Schaefer, renown for their mapping projects, has been brought to life in interactive three-dimensional graphics illustrating topics like ‘highway city’ or ‘oil world’, with the aim of providing critical information rather than straightforward corporate communication.
