LEARNING FROM TOKYO 2012 – SYMPOSIUM, ZÜRICH

“Learning from Tokyo” is an exhibition and a symposium planned for spring 2012 in Zürich that showcases small scale housing projects by progressive architecture offices in Japan. The exhibition will focus on the quality and diversity of living space produced on small building lots with limited budgets in the center of a city such as Tokyo. The symposium will feature some of the protagonists of this new generation of architects and aims to establish a dialogue with Swiss architects, planners, city officials and the interested public. The topic contrasts two very different cities and cultures which in many unexpected ways still have a lot in common.

“Learning from Tokyo” is a not-for profit project by “Learning from Tokyo Group” initiated by Hiromi Hosoya and Markus Schaefer and established in 2011.

“Learning from Tokyo” received grants from the Japan Foundation, Sakae Stünzi Foundation and IKEA Stiftung Schweiz and is supported by ANA, All Nippon Airlines.

Archi-neering design exhibition 2011 – exhibition, tokyo japan

Uniting and Evolving Technology and Architectural Design

Hosoya Schaefer Architects was invited to exhibit the project, L(e)ichtraum, at the Archi-Neering Design Exhibition 2011 in Tokyo in collaboration with the structural engineer, Mitsuhiro Kanada, Associate Professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music, Dept of Architecture. The exhibition will travel to Taiwan and possibly China and Korea.

WIL-WEST – TEST PLANNING 2011

Hosoya Schaefer in collaboration with IBV Hüsler, Nüesch Development and Robin Winogrond Landscape Architects was commissioned to prepare a masterplan for a site next to Wil (SG), Switzerland. The proposal uses an urban farm as an immediate intervention to position the development on the market.

Swiss pavilion expo 2012 in YEOSU, KOREA - COMPETITION 2011

Hosoya Schaefer in collaboration with Exponential Group, Shanghai and Luxoom, Berlin have been selected by Präsenz Schweiz as one of five teams to prepare a proposal for the Swiss Pavilion at the World Exposition 2012 in Yeosu Korea. The theme of the exposition is „Living Oceans and Coasts“. The Swiss contribution needed to create a thematic connection to Switzerland, include a satellite presence in Seoul and allow for highlighting the Swiss Cleantech industry. The theme proposed “We Produce Oceans” was used as an online platform with an online game, as an urban installation and curation in Seoul and as a leitmotiv for the pavilion in Yeosu.

Butterfly House – 2011 Ain, France

Hosoya Schaefer Architects are commissioned to design a private house in Ain, France. Construction of the house is scheduled to begin in spring 2012.

Restaurant, Badrutt’s Palace, St. moritz, 2011 -

Hosoya Schaefer Architects together with projX management gmbh, Pontresina, were commissioned to propose a new restaurant design for the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Invited as a Fulbright Alumni from Harvard University Markus Schaefer gave a lecture with the title the “Business of Cities“: “We live in the Urban Millennium. Rapid urbanization defines new business areas and makes us think of cities as products. But are the “smart cities” which are now being developed truly sustainable? Looking back on 8000 years of urbanism, business might not change our perception of cities, but rather cities could change our understanding of business.”
